Business Statistics is, at its heart, a practical subject — it exists to help decisions get made under uncertainty, not to be admired as abstract mathematics. This book was written with that single idea as its organising principle. Every formula introduced here is followed immediately by a plainlanguage note on why it matters in an actual business setting, and every technique is demonstrated through fully worked numerical problems — not sketched out in the abbreviated, gap-filled way many textbooks treat “obvious” steps, but solved completely, with every intermediate calculation shown and verified. The five modules in this book move in a deliberate sequence. We begin with the descriptive foundations — how to summarise a mass of raw data into a handful of meaningful numbers (Module 1). We then look at how two variables relate to one another, and how that relationship can be used for prediction (Module 2). From there we turn to data that unfolds over time, and to the index numbers that let us track prices and quantities on a common scale (Module 3). The second half of the book shifts from describing data that already exists to reasoning under genuine uncertainty: probability theory and the standard probability distributions that model real business randomness (Module 4), and finally the machinery of estimation and hypothesis testing that lets a sample of data support a rigorous, defensible conclusion about an entire population (Module 5). A few features are worth knowing about as you use this book. Formulas are always set apart in a shaded box, immediately followed by a short note connecting the formula to a genuine business decision — a pricing choice, a quality-control judgment, a hiring decision, an investment comparison. Numerical problems progress deliberately from simple, mechanical practice through to genuine business case studies, and wherever it was useful, later problems deliberately reuse the data or the results of earlier ones, so that the connections between techniques — how correlation feeds into regression, how a Z-test and a confidence interval are really the same underlying idea asked in two different directions — are visible rather than left for the reader to notice on their own. Every numerical answer in this book was computed programmatically rather than worked by hand, and cross-checked against standard statistical tables and known reference values, in the hope of giving you a resource you can trust completely while you are learning to check your own work. Statistics rewards patience and rewards showing your steps; this book was built in that same spirit. I hope it serves you well, whether you are working through it as part of a formal course or returning to it later as a working reference.
